What to do if your car overheats? Steps to follow

Paola L

An overheating car can be a frustrating experience and if not handled properly, can cause serious damage to the engine. At New Again Auto Repair, we understand how important it is to keep your vehicle in top condition. That’s why we’ve put together this article to guide you on what to do if your car overheats and when it’s necessary to seek professional help.

1. Stay calm

The first and most important thing is to stay calm. Overheating doesn’t necessarily mean your car is in dire straits. Most of the time, you can take steps to handle the situation and prevent further damage.

2. Identify the signs of overheating

Common signs of overheating include:

  • The temperature warning light coming on on the dashboard.
  • Steam or smoke coming from the hood.
  • A burning smell.
  • Unusual engine noises.
  • If you notice any of these signs, it’s crucial to act quickly.

3. Stop the vehicle safely

If you are driving and notice that your engine is overheating, find a safe place to stop. Avoid stopping in traffic or in dangerous areas. Once parked, turn off the engine immediately.

4. Let the engine cool down

Don’t open the hood right away. Allow the engine to cool down for at least 10-15 minutes. This is vital to avoid burns from steam or hot liquid that may be escaping from the radiator.

5. Check the cooling system

After the engine has cooled, check the coolant level. If the level is low, you may need to add coolant. Make sure you use the type recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer.

Note:

If the coolant is boiling or steaming, don’t try to open the radiator cap. Hot liquid can shoot out and cause burns.

6. Check the hose and radiator

While the engine is cooling, look at the hoses in the cooling system. Look for signs of leaks, swelling, or visible damage. Also check the radiator for clogs or damage.

7. Restart the Engine

After everything is in place and the engine has cooled down, try restarting the engine. Watch for unusual noises or if the temperature warning light comes on again.

8. If Overheating Persists

If your engine overheats again or you’re experiencing serious problems, it’s time to seek professional help. At New Again Auto Repair, we have ASE-certified technicians who can diagnose and repair any overheating issues your vehicle may have.

9. Prevent Overheating in the Future

To prevent your car from overheating in the future, be sure to perform regular maintenance including:

  • Coolant changes.
  • Checking hoses and connections.
  • Inspecting the thermostat and radiator.
  • Checking the oil level, as low oil can affect the engine’s cooling ability.

At New Again Auto Repair, we are here to help you keep your vehicle in top condition. We offer a complete repair and maintenance service, including cooling checks and thorough diagnostics. If you have any questions or need assistance, please feel free to contact us or visit our website.
